BA History at the Department of History, Queen Mary, University of London

BA History

UCAS Code V101

If you want to study a diverse range of historical topics from the Middle Ages to Contemporary History, or choose the focus of your degree at a later stage, then this is your best choice! On our broadest BA degree, you will be required to take two introductory courses on modern, early modern or medieval history and will then be able to choose your remaining units from a wide range of options.

We offer a great variety of options, which reflects the size of our department and the staff’s diverse interests, from early Muslim History to the History of Contemporary California. You will be able to choose from political, cultural, religious, social and economic themes drawn from the Department’s strength in British, European, Mediterranean and American history. The course unit system means that you are largely free to shape your own programme of study, either specialising or retaining a broad focus in your second year. Everyone takes a non-assessed, six-week workshop-based course on historical writing to assist you in preparing work to university standard.

Teaching methods include lectures, film screenings, field trips and seminars. In your final year, you work on primary source material, either through a document-based special subject or through original research on a subject of your own choice that leads to a 15,000-word research dissertation. Full advantage is taken of Queen Mary’s London location, including its ready access to a wealth of libraries and original sources in the National Archives.
