Mariana Saad is currently a Wellcome Trust History of Medicine Research Fellow in the department where she is investigating the impact of the Recueil de Mémoires sur les Établissements d'Humanité (1798-1804) in the reorganisation of hospitals in France during the crucial period of the end of the Directory and the Consulat.
She received her PhD in Philosophy from the University of Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne for her thesis on Cabanis’s conceptions of health and disease (Santé et maladie dans l’œuvre de P.J.G. Cabanis, 1997). A Singer-Polignac award (Institut de France) and a Lavoisier grant (French Ministry of Foreign Affairs) allowed her to come to Britain to research the influence of British reformers on Cabanis. From October 2000 to June 2002, she was a Visiting Research Fellow at the History Department of Oxford Brookes University and a resident of the Maison Française d’Oxford. As a Scientific Attaché at the French Embassy in London, from November 2002 till January 2009, she promoted French-British collaboration in the humanities and social sciences, and supported several networks.
She is the author of a number of articles mainly on the history of medicine in France in the 18th century and the Idéologues. She edited « Mécanisme et Vitalisme : la controverse médicale au XVIIIe siècle » for the Revue de la Maison Française (Oxford, 2001) and the special issue on « Melancholy and Material Unity of Man, 17th and 18th centuries », in collaboration with Claire Crignon, for Gesnerus Swiss Journal of the History of Medicine and Sciences (Basel, 2006).
