Physiognomy: The Arts and Sciences of the Face, 1500-1850

This Project, established in 2007, is currently funded by a Leverhulme International Network Award. Professor Colin Jones is Principal Investigator, and his Co-Investigators are Professor Nadeije Laneyrie-Dagen (École Normale Supérieure, Paris) and Professor Lina Bolzoni (Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa). Dr Delphine Doucet (History, Queen Mary, University of London) is the postdoctoral Network Facilititator.

The Project seeks to explore the history of the physiognomy in Europe in an interdisciplinary manner. The first phase of our activities is the period running roughly from the Renaissance until the emergence of Darwinism, in the middle of the nineteenth century. Subsequently, we hope to extend the boundaries of the investigation to periods both before and after this date, and to non-European physiognomical traditions.

The first of three international conferences organised by the Project will take place at at the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris, 13-15 December 2007. For further details, please consult Dr Delphine Doucet.

The Project is developing a Physiognomy Website.
