Established at Queen Mary in December 2003, the Mile End Group (MEG) was the brainchild of a group of postgraduate students working under Professor Peter Hennessy. It takes the form of a lecture series blending postgraduate students' areas of research with external luminaries’ personal reflections. Lectures concentrate on issues concerning contemporary British history, with particular emphasis on politics and Whitehall past and present.

The lecture series proved so successful that the Group is involved in branching out into conferences, dinners, business consultancy and publishing. The Mile End Institute (for the Study of Government, Intelligence and Society), was formed in 2005 as an umbrella organisation for MEG’s burgeoning activities.
