How to apply

The School of History at Queen Mary, University of London is an exciting, friendly, diverse community of scholars, which stretches from first year undergraduates to senior professors.

We give careful consideration to every application to join that community.

This page outlines how to make an application, our usual admissions requirements including supporting documents, and what happens after you apply.

Application process

To apply for a Masters (MA) at the School of History, you’ll need to complete a form on the Queen Mary website.

International applicants

International applicants are welcome to contact one of our authorised local representatives for assistance with making an application.

They will guide you through the application process and can upload online documents, or scan and send your completed paper application form direct to Queen Mary. They do not charge for their services.

Admissions requirements for an MA in History vary depending on the course you are applying for.

Supporting documentation

Before applying you will need to ensure you have the following documents:

  • Degree transcripts
    If you have not yet completed your degree please provide a transcript of your results achieved to date

  • Two References

Please provide two references from your previous academic institution on headed paper. If you have left university it is acceptable to provide one academic and one employer reference.

  • Proof of English language ability for international applicants from non-English speaking countries

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)

  • Statement of purpose
    Your statement of purpose should explain why you want to study your chosen programme and how it will help your life and career. This should typically be one side of A4 paper.

International applicants

In addition to the documents listed above, international applicants should provide evidence of English language ability (e.g. IELTS or TOEFL).

What happens after you apply?

Admissions Tutors will consider your completed application form. Providing you have included all the required documentation, we aim to inform you of a decision on your application within four weeks of receipt.
