The QMUL/Umeå Exchange has developed around the research Project Imitatio Mariae: The Virgin Mary as Model in Southern Medieval Swedish Society. It involved joint critical assessment of the materials – textual, material, architectural – collected by members of the project led by Professor Joan Carlquist. The workshop on 28 October 2011 took place at QMUL and discussed the first tranche of materials of extremely interesting and mostly unpublished. The QMUL members’ interests in liturgy, art, music and devotional literature fitted well with the regional expertise of the colleagues from Umeå. Future meetings will take place as the Project unfolds, and members also aim to apply jointly for funding to promote shared interests.
The Umeå Premodern Research Group also has contact with the Centre for the History of Emotions at Queen Mary, University of London.
