American Civil War Walking Tours

April 2011 - November 2015 marks the American Civil War Sesquicentennial. State governments and universities in the United States are organising events to commemorate the anniversary, whilst countless sites relevant to the major event will be frequently visited by tourists. A number of crucial American Civil War sites, however, exist in London which have been all but forgotten, but are about to be brought to the fore once again. Dr Tom Sebrell, a resident academic at QMUL with a PhD in the American Civil War in Britain, has received funding grants necessary to develop an academic entrepreneurship in the form of creating the first-ever American Civil War tourism initiative in London. Three separate walking tours have been established in Central London which will be open to the public at 3pm & 7pm on Tuesdays - Sundays for the forseeable future. Whilst Tom will be leading an abbreviated schedule of tours for 2 weeks from 8 October, he will be rigorously training undergraduate's from QMUL's School of History to serve as guides for the tours, and they are scheduled to take the reigns commencing 26 October. This provides our undergraduates with a rare chance of gaining an indepth knowledge of a most crucial (and too often ignored) sub-topic of a war which permanently changed the course of world history, to regularly convey this information to audiences in a professional manner and setting, to play very active roles in the most exciting American Civil War project in 50 years, and to gain experience in converting learned knowledge into a business which benefits the local community.
