BA Modern and Contemporary History

This BA programme is for those with a strong interest in the making of the world we live in today. You will be able to choose from a wide range of courses focussing on the history of Europe and the United States in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.  The School of History is home to many of the leading historians of this period.  Our staff has expertise in modern British, European, and American history, as well as in the international relations that have defined the contemporary world.

The BA in Modern and Contemporary History is carefully structured to build on your A Level study as you develop the skills and knowledge that come with intensively studying history. Our teaching methods reflect the richness and diversity of historical sources for the modern era.  You will learn about this period through lectures, film screenings, field trips and seminars.  Your reading will encompass historical studies, archival documents and works of literature.  Click through for information about each year, modules, teaching and assessment.

The School of History’s standard entry requirement is 320 UCAS points (equivalent to ABB at A-Level – though we do not accept A-Levels in Critical Thinking and General Studies), however we are interested in hearing from all who would like to take one of our innovative degree programmes. Alternative qualifications are accepted. Please contact the Admissions Department for more information.

Fees

Tuition fees for Home and EU students will be set at £9,000 per year from September 2012 and the college will put into place a significant package of scholarships and bursaries to ensure access for all.

Higher fees may seem daunting, but remember that you do not have to pay anything up front and the arrangements for repaying your tuition fees and maintenance loan have been designed to make higher education as affordable as possible. You will not have to start repaying your tuition fee loan until the April after you graduate and are earning at least £21,000 a year. Income-related repayments will be deducted automatically from your pay through the tax system.
